AISSLab International Joint Workshop (Korea + Turkey): A Collaborative Milestone in AI Research

AISSLab International Joint Workshop (Korea + Turkey): A Collaborative Milestone in AI Research

  • On August 14th, 2024, AISSLab had the privilege of hosting an exceptional event that marked a significant milestone in our ongoing research collaboration between South Korea and Turkey.
  • The AISSLab International Joint Workshop brought together leading experts, researchers, and students from various universities in South Korea, alongside esteemed guests from the Turkish Embassy.

R&D Project Focus

  • The workshop centered around our groundbreaking R&D project titled: "An Explainable Hybrid AI Workflow for MRI Lumbar Spinal Stenosis."
  • This project represents a collaborative effort between Sejong University in South Korea and Firat University in Turkey, supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and TÜBİTAK.
  • Our goal is to harness the power of AI to develop more accurate and interpretable diagnostic tools for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, a condition that significantly impacts the quality of life for many patients.

Workshop Highlights

  • The event kicked off with opening remarks from our lab’s head, Prof. Mugahed A. Al-antari, who highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing AI research.
  • This was followed by a keynote speech from the Turkish Embassy representative, emphasizing the strong ties between our two nations in the field of scientific research.
  • Throughout the day, we had insightful presentations from several esteemed professors, each bringing a unique perspective from their respective fields.
  • Topics ranged from the integration of Explainable AI (XAI) in medical diagnostics to the latest advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and their applications in healthcare.

Collaborative Research and Future Prospects

  • One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the potential of combining XAI and LLMs to create a hybrid AI model that not only improves diagnostic accuracy but also ensures that the AI's decision-making process is transparent and interpretable.

Memorable Moments

  • The workshop concluded with a group photo, capturing the spirit of collaboration and shared commitment to advancing AI in healthcare. In the front row stood the distinguished professors and the Turkish Embassy visitor, symbolizing the strong academic and diplomatic ties that have been forged through this project.
  • Behind them were the research students, representing the next generation of AI researchers who will carry this important work forward.

Vice President Meeting: Professor Woo-Young Hong

  • During the workshop, our team had the distinct honour of meeting with Professor Hong Woo-young, the Vice President for Administration, Research, and External Affairs at Sejong University.
  • This meeting was not just a formal encounter but a meaningful exchange of ideas that highlighted the importance of administrative support in driving forward international research collaborations.
  • Professor Hong's insights on fostering academic partnerships and his encouragement for continued collaboration between South Korea and Turkey were invaluable.
  • The photo of this meeting captures a moment of solidarity and shared vision, underscoring the strong institutional backing that AISSLab enjoys in its research endeavours.

Pioneering AI Research with Professor Seong Joon Yoo

  • A standout moment of the workshop was the group photo featuring the Head of AISSLab, the Turkish team, and Distinguished Professor Seong Joon Yoo. Professor Yoo, a leading researcher at the Artificial Convergence Research Center (ACRC) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, joined the team to commemorate this significant event.
  • This photograph not only captures the collaborative spirit but also highlights the shared vision for future research endeavours. The presence of Professor Yoo underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the pursuit of innovative ideas that drive the future of AI research.
  • This moment symbolizes the strong academic bonds and the collective efforts of South Korean and Turkish researchers in advancing the field of AI.
