AISSLab Professor Conducts Three-Day International Workshop Tour in Turkey

XAI framework for the Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS) Prediction – NRF/TUBITAK joint research project

Definition: An academic workshop for an international joint research project between Korea and Türkiye.

Purpose: The goal of this Korea and Türkiye international joint research project is to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative solutions through collaborative efforts across multiple disciplines and countries.

Scope: The scope of the project titled "An Innovative Explainable Hybrid AI Workflow for Predicting Lumbar Spinal Stenosis in MRI" involves creating, validating, and deploying a novel AI end-to-end system to improve the accuracy and interpretability of predicting lumbar spinal stenosis from MRI sagittal and axial scans.

Location: Congress Center, Computer Engineering Department, Firat University, Elazığ, Türkiye.

Day 1: Arrival and Meeting with the Turkish team members in Elazığ (30 June 2025 (Mon))

Key Activities

Met with the Turkish team members in Elazığ, a city significantly impacted by a major earthquake, to visit the offices of Firat University professors, explore research laboratories, and interact with graduate students.

Prepared the PowerPoint materials for the upcoming presentations scheduled for Tuesday, which will be delivered in collaboration with a neurologist at the hospital.

In line with the workshop agenda, we prepared four PowerPoint presentations to showcase our research achievements.

Day 2: Workshop at Firat University, Elazığ (01 July 2025 (Tue))

Key Activities

Presentation Day: A comprehensive program was prepared in advance, collaboratively organized by both the Turkish and Korean teams.

Team members engaged in face-to-face discussions during which medical experts at Firat University Hospital provided detailed explanations of the medical MRI datasets.

The Korean team presented the current progress of their work, including dataset development and its limitations, as well as key research outcomes such as journal publications, patent filings, and presentations at top-tier and international conferences.

For your reference, the full presentation day agenda is attached. The attendees are both Korea and Turkey team members including the neurologists from the Firat university hospital.

In the afternoon, we received a special invitation to the Office of the President at Firat University to officially acknowledge our visit to Turkey and to co-sign certificates of honorary participation for all team members from both Korea and Turkey.

A photo session was held with the President of Firat University, along with the Korean and Turkish teams and other attendees. A news article highlighting our visit and the significance of the collaborative project is currently being prepared by Firat University. (See Figure 1).

Professor Mugahed A. Al-antari introduced Sejong University and expressed our international interest in expanding academic and research collaboration. He proposed a student exchange program between the two universities. The President of Firat University welcomed the idea enthusiastically, and we had an extended discussion on the potential for such a program. (See Figure 2).

Plan to further discuss this initiative with the Vice President for International Affairs and the Strategic Planning Department at Sejong University. If there is mutual interest, I would be happy to fully support the university in moving this forward.

Day 3: Special speaker invitation from İnönü University (03 July 2025 (Thu))

Key Activities

I received a special speaker invitation from İnönü University, the second partner institution in our collaborative project. The university is in Malatya, one of the city’s most severely impacted by the recent major earthquake in Turkey.

Professor Mugahed A. Al-antari delivered an invited seminar to introduce our collaborative research efforts and presented on the topic of "XAI-based VLLM", focusing on the practical applications of large language models (LLMs) in real-world research contexts.

The seminar was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, professors from various departments, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as representatives from the local business community.

Once the seminar and lunch ceremony has finished, the Korean team traveled to Istanbul to finalize the workshop program.
